Notes

Hello there says Pauly and so do I, your teacher Lorri who welcome you again to our 16th lesson of the pre-intermediate course.

Today we will look at the usage of modal verbs "must" and "have to" and "need to".

Sveikina jus Paulius ir aš, jūsų mokytoja Lorri atvykus jau į 16-ąją pamoką. Šiandien mes pasidomėsime modalinių veiksmažodžių privalėti ir reikėti vartojimu bei praplėsime žodyną spėkite kokioje srityje. Guess what vocabulary we will be learning today?

  • A man told his friend: "My wife only has two complaints: nothing to wear and not enough closet space".

Žmona turi du nusiskundimus, nėra ko dėvėti ir nėra vietos spintoje. Matyt, mokysimės apie tai, kas kaba spintoje.

  • - Lorri, do you remember the puzzle you told us last time?
  • - Ah, the one about the Liars and the Truthtelllers.
  • - I tried to solve this puzzle. Will you tell the right answer?

There are two tribes in the faraway country: Liars and Truth-tellers. Both tribes speak the same language, but the Truth-tellers always tell the truth, and the Liars never tell the truth.

An explorer going through that country came to a rushing river and saw three natives of that land on the other side. He knew their language, so he shouted across the river to the first man: “Are you a Liar or a Truth-teller?” The man replied, but his answer was lost in the noise of the rushing water.

The second man had heard the question, and seeing that the explorer did not hear the first man’s answer, he cried out: “This man said he is a Truth-teller. He is a Truth-teller. So am I a Truth-teller.”

When the third man heard that, he pointed at the last speaker and said mockingly, “Do not believe him! He’s a Liar; but I’m a Truth-teller!”

  • - Pirmasis turėjo būti teisuolis, nes jei taip, tai jis ir būtų teisus sakydamas, kad yra teisuolis, o jei jis būtų melagis, tai būtų melavęs sakydamas, kad yra teisuolis.
  • - Logical, Pauly. The first man must have been a Truth-teller, because if he really was a Truth-teller, he would have told the truth, and if he was a Liar, he would have told a lie and said that he was a Truth-teller.
  • - Very good Pauly, the second man, then, must have told the truth when he said that the first man said he was a Truth-teller. Therefore he himself was a Truth-teller. All his words were therefore true, so the first man must have been in fact a Truth teller.
  • - Taigi, trečiasis vyras, kuris sakė, kad antrasis vyras yra melagis, akivaizdžiai meluoja ir pats yra melagis.
  • - Fantastic Pauly has solved the puzzle. The third man, who said that the second man was a Liar, is obviously not telling the truth. Therefore he is a Liar.

Na, kad jau šį galvosūkį įkandot, tai šios pamokėlės gramatika bus vieni juokai.

Grammar into action: "must" versus "have"

Tiek "must", tiek "have to" reiškia "turėti, privalėti, reikėti". "Must" neturi būtojo, esamojo atliktinio ir būsimojo laiko formų. Joms reikšti vartojamas "have to".

Visi darbuotojai turi vilkėti uniformas. - All staff must wear uniforms. All staff have to wear uniforms.

Jis turėjo apsivilkti paltą. - He had to put on the coat.

Vakarėlyje ji turės vilkėti savo naująjį sijoną. - She will have to wear her new skirt for the party.
